And just like that Christmas is upon us. Whether it’s the holly and the icy mornings or the sound of the red-chested cuckoo (Piet-My-Vrou) and the smells of summer. Just about everything is pointing towards that time of the year. It is a time for family, friends, good food and of course great wine. Somehow wine and Christmas go together wherever you are.
Living on the opposite side of the world than where you grew up, this can be a difficult time or you can embrace Christmas traditions where you are. However, memories of Christmas as a child in South Africa are very different to Christmas in the UK. Why not close your eyes for a moment and think back to Christmas as a child. Your favourite memories. What do you smell? How do you feel?
For me, it was between the two sets of grandmothers usually. Either near the beach in Swakopmund, Namibia or on the farm outside Montagu, South Africa. The two experiences were completely different. Swakopmund Christmasses were filled with German traditions and concerts with cousins while on the farm we spent lots of time around the dining room table. The kids forever off on a different adventure.
Now, living on the other side of the world things are a lot different. Firstly, the possibility of snow is a real thing. There is mulled wine and Christmas markets. Freezing weather and short school breaks. For most of us that have moved from the southern hemisphere to the northern things are a lot different. Many of us are no longer surrounded by big families having braai’s and playing in the pool or running around on the beach. However, we can all get together, whether online or in-person and reminisce with new friends and family online. This is why we are so excited for our next Time to Wine Down event.
An African Christmas, Wine and Music Celebration
It will be us three, me, Michelle Cheyne from Instinctive Living and Content College, the amazing storyteller Andy Copps from My London Voice and Andy Copps Storytelling and of course our wine connoisseur, Gerhard Perold from Perold Wine Cellar and Mendip Pantry.
This will be the second of our Time to Wine Down events and this time we decided to add an in-person option. Therefore, if you are in the Chewton Mendip, Somerset, UK area, why not grab a ticket and join us for an African Christmas, story and wine celebration. There are only 15 tickets available for this. Make sure to grab one or perhaps a table to share with friends and/or family.
Our guests will include Sanelisiwe Gantsho from Cape Town who will be telling us more about her childhood Christmasses and how she celebrates today. We will also have a guest winemaker from South Africa telling us about his view on wine and Christmas. Winemaker to be announced shortly. Last but not least, what goes well with wine? Music of course. Our guest performers will also be announced shortly.
